How to Connect to a Windows Server with RDP
How to use Remote Desktop (RDP) to connect to a Windows server from Windows, macOS or your phone, transfer files, secure the server and fix common errors.

Remote Desktop (RDP, Remote Desktop Protocol) lets you see and use a Windows server's screen in a window on your own computer. When you rent a Windows VPS or dedicated server, you manage it with mouse and keyboard just like a PC on your desk. All you need to connect is the server's IP address, a user name and a password.
This guide shows how to connect with Remote Desktop from Windows, macOS, Android and iPhone, how to transfer files, how to keep the server secure and how to fix common errors.
What is RDP?
RDP is a protocol developed by Microsoft. The Remote Desktop Services running on the server listen on port 3389 by default. The client on your computer connects to that port; the server sends the screen image, and you send back your mouse and keyboard input. All traffic is encrypted.
Linux servers are usually managed from the command line over SSH; Windows servers, with their graphical interface, are managed over RDP. If you'd like to connect to a Linux server instead, see What is SSH?
You need three things to connect:
- The server's IP address
- The user name: usually
Administratoron a new Windows server - The password
At Nodesty, these details appear in the customer panel and are sent by email once your server is set up.
Connecting from Windows
Remote Desktop Connection is built into Windows:
- Type "Remote Desktop Connection" in the Start menu, or press
Win + Rand typemstsc. - Enter the server's IP address in the Computer field and click Connect.
- When asked for credentials, choose More choices > Use a different account and enter
Administratorand your password. - On the first connection you may see a warning about the server's certificate. That is normal for a newly installed server; click Yes to continue.
Before connecting, click Show Options to set the screen resolution and save the connection as an .rdp file.
Connecting from macOS
On a Mac, download Microsoft's free Windows App (formerly Microsoft Remote Desktop) from the Mac App Store:
- Open the app and choose + > Add PC.
- Enter the server's IP address in the PC name field.
- Save your user name and password under Credentials.
- Double-click the saved connection to connect.
Connecting from a phone or tablet
Microsoft's Windows App is also free for Android and iPhone/iPad. Setup is the same as on macOS: add a new PC and enter the IP address and credentials. It is handy for an urgent fix, though a computer is more comfortable for longer work.
Transferring files and sharing the clipboard
Remote Desktop offers a few easy ways to move files between your computer and the server:
- Copy and paste: clipboard sharing is on by default, so you can copy a file on your computer and paste it into a folder on the server. It is the quickest way for small files.
- Sharing local drives: in the Windows client, go to Show Options > Local Resources > More and select your computer's drives. They appear under This PC on the server, which suits larger files.
For very large files, downloading them on the server straight from the internet is usually fastest, because the data center's connection is much faster than your home one.
Keeping your Windows server secure
Port 3389 is scanned constantly. Automated password-guessing attacks start within minutes of a new Windows server going online. These steps remove most of the risk:
- Change the password. On first login, press
Ctrl + Alt + End(instead ofCtrl + Alt + Delin a remote session) to open the password change screen, and set a long, unique password. - Set an account lockout policy. In Local Security Policy (
secpol.msc) > Account Policies > Account Lockout Policy, lock the account for, say, 15 minutes after 5 failed attempts. - Restrict access to your IP. If you have a fixed IP address, allow only that address on the Scope tab of the Remote Desktop rule in Windows Defender Firewall. It is the most effective protection.
- Keep Network Level Authentication (NLA) on. NLA requires authentication before a session is created, and it is on by default.
- Keep Windows Update on. Serious flaws targeting RDP have been fixed through updates in the past.
Moving RDP from port 3389 to another number reduces the noise in your logs, but it is not a security measure on its own.
Common RDP errors
- "Remote Desktop can't connect to the remote computer": the server may be off, the IP address may be wrong or a firewall is blocking the connection. Check in the panel that the server is running.
- "Your credentials did not work": make sure you typed the user name as
Administratorand that no spaces crept in before or after the password when you copied it. - The account is locked: too many failed attempts. Wait until the lockout period ends.
- The connection is slow or choppy: on the client's Experience tab, choose a lower connection speed and turn off visual effects like the desktop background.
If you've locked yourself out with a firewall setting, don't panic: the web console in the Nodesty customer panel gives you the server's screen independently of Remote Desktop.
Windows VPS at Nodesty
On Nodesty's AMD Ryzen 9 9950X VPS and AMD EPYC 7763 VPS plans you can choose Windows Server 2019, 2022 or 2025 at no extra cost when ordering. Setup starts automatically once payment is confirmed, and your Remote Desktop details appear in the panel. Because Windows uses more memory than Linux, we recommend a plan with at least 4 GB of RAM.
Frequently Asked Questions
What port does RDP use?
Remote Desktop uses port 3389 by default. If the port has been changed, add a colon and the port number after the IP address when connecting, for example 203.0.113.10:3390.
How do I connect to a Windows server from a Mac?
Download Microsoft's free Windows App (formerly Microsoft Remote Desktop) from the Mac App Store. Add a new PC and enter the server's IP address, user name and password.
How many people can connect to a Windows server at once?
Windows Server allows two simultaneous Remote Desktop sessions for administration. If more users need to work at the same time, you need the Remote Desktop Services (RDS) role and additional per-user licenses (RDS CALs).
How much RAM does a Windows server need?
Windows Server uses noticeably more memory than Linux. For a comfortable Remote Desktop experience plus the applications you'll run, plan for a plan with at least 4 GB of RAM.
I forgot my password or locked myself out. What now?
If a firewall setting is blocking you, the web console in the Nodesty customer panel gives you the server's screen independently of Remote Desktop. If you've forgotten your password, contact our support team or reinstall the operating system from the panel.
Is Remote Desktop secure?
RDP traffic is encrypted, but port 3389 is scanned constantly and hit by password-guessing attacks. A strong password, an account lockout policy and, where possible, a firewall rule that only allows your own IP address cut the risk dramatically.
