How Much RAM Does a Garry's Mod Server Need?

A TTT server with a handful of maps and few addons can run in under 2 GB. DarkRP, on the other hand, grows with hundreds of addons, custom jobs, vehicles and maps; as player count rises, both memory and the server's main thread come under pressure.

The most common cause of lag on GMod servers isn't a lack of RAM but badly written Lua addons. Watching the server's tick time after adding a new addon lets you catch problems before they grow.

DarkRP, TTT and Prop Hunt Gamemodes

Garry's Mod gets its strength from gamemodes. You choose which mode runs with the +gamemode parameter when starting the server, and you can run several GMod servers with different modes on the same machine.

DarkRP

The most popular roleplay gamemode. Install DarkRP from GitHub into the gamemodes folder and the darkrpmodification addon, where you define jobs and items, into addons. Jobs live in jobs.lua and shipments in shipments.lua.

Trouble in Terrorist Town (TTT)

Ships with the game and needs no extra install. Most TTT maps use Counter-Strike: Source content; download it to the server with SteamCMD (app 232330) and mount it with mount.cfg.

Prop Hunt and other modes

Modes like Prop Hunt, Murder, Deathrun and Jailbreak are added from the Workshop. Add the mode to your collection and change the +gamemode value in the launch command.

Workshop Collections and FastDL

Gather the addons your server uses into a Steam Workshop collection and add +host_workshop_collection COLLECTION_ID to the launch command. The server downloads and updates every addon in the collection on startup.

Players need that content too, otherwise they see purple-and-black checkerboards and ERROR models. For Workshop content, add resource.AddWorkshop lines in lua/autorun/server so players download it automatically when they connect.

For custom files that aren't on the Workshop (your own map, sounds or materials), use FastDL. Publish the compressed files on a web server and point to it with sv_downloadurl. With full administrator access, you can run that web server on the same machine with nginx, which largely ends players getting stuck while downloading.

How to Set Up a GMod Server

The Garry's Mod dedicated server runs on SRCDS, Valve's Source server software. If you choose Garry's Mod during installation, the files come preinstalled; the steps below help you finish the configuration.

1Choose your GMod plan and select Garry's Mod during the operating system installation.
2If installing yourself, run app_update 4020 validate in SteamCMD to download the server files.
3Create a GSLT on Steam's Game Server Account Management page with app ID 4000 and add it to the launch command as +sv_setsteamaccount TOKEN.
4In garrysmod/cfg/server.cfg, set the server name (hostname), password (sv_password) and RCON password (rcon_password).
5Start the server with a command such as +gamemode darkrp +map rp_downtown_v4c_v2 +maxplayers 32 +host_workshop_collection COLLECTION_ID.
6Add ULX and ULib to your Workshop collection and make yourself an admin with ulx adduser username superadmin in the server console.
7The default port is 27015. Players join from the server browser or by typing connect server-ip:27015 in the console.

GMod Server Performance and Lua Errors

A Garry's Mod server's tick time is set by the Lua code in your addons. An addon hook that runs every tick or constantly spawned physics objects slow the server down as players join, and players feel it as laggy vehicles and rubber-banding.

Check the server console for Lua errors regularly; an addon that errors constantly bloats the logs and tires the server. Profiling tools such as FProfiler show how much time each addon takes.

Installing the server from the -beta x86-64 branch in SteamCMD gives you 64-bit SRCDS, so large addon collections don't hit the 32-bit version's memory limit. Raising the tick rate (-tickrate) too high increases CPU load; 33 or 66 is enough for most DarkRP servers.

Server Administration with ULX

ULX is Garry's Mod's most widely used admin tool. It lets you kick, ban, mute and teleport players from an in-game menu (!menu). Permission groups (moderator, admin, superadmin) and the commands each group can use are configured through ULib.

If you use DarkRP, its own admin tool FAdmin comes built in; most servers use it alongside ULX. Larger communities also choose alternative admin addons such as SAM.
