How to Make a Palworld Server, Step by Step
How to make a Palworld server: dedicated server setup with SteamCMD, PalWorldSettings.ini settings, port 8211, admin commands and save backups.

Contents
Making a Palworld server comes down to four steps: you download the free Palworld Dedicated Server files with SteamCMD, run the server once so the settings file is created, set the name, password and gameplay options in the PalWorldSettings.ini file and open UDP port 8211. On your own server, the world is always online; your friends can return to the bases you've built and your Pals whenever they want.
This guide covers setting up a Palworld server on Linux from scratch, the settings, ports, admin commands and tips for keeping the server healthy.
Requirements
- Operating system: Palworld Dedicated Server runs on 64-bit Linux and Windows. We use Ubuntu and Debian in this guide.
- RAM: Palworld is one of the most memory-hungry game servers. The developer recommends 16 GB; a small group of friends can start with 8 GB, and 32 GB is more comfortable for busy servers.
- CPU: High single-core speed determines how smooth bases with many Pals feel. At least 4 cores are recommended.
- Storage: Set aside a few tens of GB of free space for the server files and saves. NVMe storage reduces stutters during saves.
- Player limit: Up to 32 players.
All you need to know is how to connect to a server over SSH; we give every other command step by step.
Installing SteamCMD
For security, run the server as a separate user instead of root:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install lib32gcc-s1 curl tmux
sudo useradd -m -s /bin/bash palworld
sudo su - palworld
mkdir ~/steamcmd && cd ~/steamcmd
curl -sqL "https://steamcdn-a.akamaihd.net/client/installer/steamcmd_linux.tar.gz" | tar zxvf -
Downloading the Palworld server files
The Steam app ID for Palworld Dedicated Server is 2394010:
~/steamcmd/steamcmd.sh +force_install_dir /home/palworld/server +login anonymous +app_update 2394010 validate +quit
Create this link so the server can find the Steam library; otherwise the server may throw a steamclient.so error at startup:
mkdir -p ~/.steam/sdk64
ln -s ~/steamcmd/linux64/steamclient.so ~/.steam/sdk64/steamclient.so
Starting the server for the first time
Start the server in a tmux session so it doesn't shut down when you close your SSH connection:
cd ~/server
tmux new -s palworld ./PalServer.sh -port=8211 -players=16 -useperfthreads -NoAsyncLoadingThread -UseMultithreadForDS
-port: The game port. The default is 8211.-players: The maximum number of players (up to 32).-useperfthreads -NoAsyncLoadingThread -UseMultithreadForDS: Lets the server use more than one core; improves performance on multi-core servers.
On the first launch, the server creates the world and the settings folders. Once the server is up, stop it with Ctrl + C; we'll edit the settings in the next step.
Settings with PalWorldSettings.ini
Palworld's default settings are in the DefaultPalWorldSettings.ini file. Copy this file to where the server reads it:
cp ~/server/DefaultPalWorldSettings.ini ~/server/Pal/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/PalWorldSettings.ini
nano ~/server/Pal/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/PalWorldSettings.ini
All the settings are on a single long line starting with OptionSettings=(...). Only change the values, without splitting the line. The most important settings:
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
ServerName | The name shown in the server list |
ServerDescription | The server description |
ServerPassword | The password players need to join; if empty, anyone can join |
AdminPassword | The password for becoming an admin in game |
ServerPlayerMaxNum | The maximum number of players |
PublicPort | The game port (default 8211) |
ExpRate | The experience points multiplier |
PalCaptureRate | The Pal capture rate multiplier |
DeathPenalty | What you drop when you die (None, Item, ItemAndEquipment, All) |
RCONEnabled | Turns on remote management with RCON |
RCONPort | The RCON port (default 25575) |
For example, the relevant part of the line looks like this:
ServerName="Your server name",ServerPassword="secret123",AdminPassword="a-strong-password",ServerPlayerMaxNum=16
Always edit the settings while the server is stopped. The server only reads the settings at startup and can overwrite the file when it shuts down. After saving, restart the server.
Ports and firewall
By default, a Palworld server uses UDP port 8211. If you use ufw on Ubuntu:
sudo ufw allow 8211/udp
If you turned on RCON, open TCP port 25575 only to your own IP address, not to everyone. We explain how ports work in What is a port?
Connecting to the server
In the game, go to the Join Multiplayer Game (Dedicated Server) option. Type the server's IP address and port in the box at the bottom of the screen, like 203.0.113.10:8211, press Connect and, after entering the password, you're in the world.
If you want your server to appear in the community server list, add -publiclobby to the launch command. If you're playing with friends, a private server with a password is usually the better choice.
Admin commands
In game, type /AdminPassword yourpassword into the chat window to become an admin. Commonly used commands:
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
/ShowPlayers | Lists connected players and their IDs |
/KickPlayer ID | Kicks a player from the server |
/BanPlayer ID | Bans a player |
/Save | Saves the world |
/Broadcast message | Sends a message to all players |
/Shutdown 60 message | Shuts the server down after 60 seconds with a message |
Keeping the server healthy
- Restart regularly. The longer a Palworld server stays up, the more memory it uses. A daily restart at the hour with the fewest players prevents this; we explain how to automate it in What is cron?
- Apply updates quickly. When the game is updated, players can't connect to a server on an older version. Stop the server and run the SteamCMD command again.
- Back up your saves. World and player data are kept in the
Pal/Saved/SaveGamesfolder. Before big updates, make a copy of this folder:tar -czf ~/palworld-backup-$(date +%F).tar.gz -C ~/server/Pal/Saved SaveGames
We cover taking regular backups that are independent of the server in our Server backups guide.
Nodesty for your Palworld server

Frequently Asked Questions
Does it cost anything to make a Palworld server?
No. The Palworld Dedicated Server software is free and downloads anonymously with SteamCMD. You only pay for the machine that keeps the server online 24/7. Players just need to own Palworld.
How much RAM does a Palworld server need?
Palworld is one of the most memory-hungry game servers. A small group of friends can start with 8 GB, but the developer recommends 16 GB; for busy servers approaching 32 players, 32 GB is a more comfortable choice. Because memory use grows as the game goes on, regular restarts matter too.
How many players can join a Palworld server?
The dedicated server supports up to 32 players. You set the limit with the ServerPlayerMaxNum setting in PalWorldSettings.ini and the -players parameter in the launch command. The realistic limit depends on the server's RAM and CPU.
Can I move my co-op world to a dedicated server?
Copying the world's save folder to the server is possible, but extra edits are needed because the character of the player who hosted the co-op world is recognized under a different identity on the server. Community-made save conversion tools are used for this; always back up your saves before you start.
I can't connect to the server. Why?
The most common causes are UDP port 8211 being closed, the server and game versions not matching and a wrong password. If the game was updated, run the SteamCMD command again to update the server too. Check that the server is really running from the console or with the ss -ulpn command.
I changed my settings but nothing changed in the game. Why?
Palworld only reads its settings when the server starts and can overwrite the file when the server shuts down. Always edit the settings while the server is stopped, and make sure the OptionSettings line stays a single line with its parentheses intact.
