What Is a Domain Name and How Do You Get One?

What is a domain name and how does it work? Choosing an extension and registrar, renewals, transfers, WHOIS privacy and connecting it to hosting and email.

The word Domain with TLD, Registrar and DNS on a dark Nodesty background

A domain name is the human-readable address of a website or email address on the internet, such as nodesty.com. Computers connect to each other using IP addresses like 203.0.113.10; a domain name means nobody has to remember those numbers. You register a domain through a registrar, usually by the year, and point it to the server that hosts your site using DNS records.

This guide explains what a domain name is, what its parts are, how to register one, what to consider when choosing an extension and how to connect your domain to hosting and email.

How does a domain name work?

When you type a domain into your browser, these steps happen within milliseconds:

  1. The browser asks DNS servers which IP address the domain belongs to.
  2. DNS reaches the domain's nameservers and reads the IP address from its A record.
  3. The browser connects to the server at that IP address and requests the site's files.

The domain itself doesn't hold any files or run a server; it is only an address. Where that address points is decided by DNS records, which we cover in detail in What is DNS?.

The parts of a domain name

Let's read blog.examplecompany.co.uk from right to left:

PartExampleMeaning
TLD.ukTop-level domain; either a country (.uk, .de) or generic (.com)
Second level.co.ukSome country extensions use it to indicate a category
Domain nameexamplecompanyThe part you register and own
SubdomainblogAddresses you create yourself at no extra cost

Subdomains are addresses you can create for free once you own a domain: blog., panel., mc. and so on. Each can point to a different server. Your main site can live on web hosting while mc.yourdomain.com points to a Minecraft server.

How to choose a domain extension

  • .com: The most widespread and most trusted extension in the world. If you serve an international audience, it should be your first choice.
  • Country extensions (.co.uk, .de, .com.tr and so on): Give you a local identity in that country. Each is run by its own national registry, and some have extra requirements, such as a local address or documents.
  • .net, .org: Good alternatives if the .com is taken; .org is commonly used by non-profits and open-source projects.
  • .io, .dev, .app and other newer extensions: Popular with tech projects, but renewal prices are often higher. .dev and .app only load over HTTPS.

A good domain is short, easy to spell and hard to mishear when said out loud. Avoid hyphens where you can, and avoid accented or special characters: they are technically possible but cause trouble in email addresses and some applications.

How to register a domain name

  1. Check availability. Search for the name on any registrar's website. If it's taken, try another extension or a small variation.
  2. Choose a registrar. When comparing prices, look at the renewal price, not just the first year. Discounted first years followed by expensive renewals are common.
  3. Enter accurate details. Register the domain in your own name or your company's, with an email address you'll keep. Transfer and renewal notices go there.
  4. Turn on auto-renewal. The most common way to lose a domain is a failed renewal because the card on file expired.
  5. Set up DNS. Point the domain to the hosting and email services you'll use.

WHOIS and privacy

Every domain has a public registration record showing when it was registered and when it expires. You can look it up with WHOIS or its successor, RDAP. Most registrars now hide personal details in this record by default; if yours doesn't, turn on WHOIS privacy so your name, phone number and address don't end up on spam lists.

Make sure registrar lock (transfer lock) is enabled too. It prevents the domain from being moved to another registrar without your permission. Most registrars turn it on by default.

Connecting a domain to hosting and email

There are two ways to connect a domain to a service:

  • Change the nameservers: You replace your domain's nameservers with the ones your hosting provider gives you. From then on, you manage all your DNS records in the hosting control panel. This is the simplest option if everything runs in one place.
  • Add DNS records: The nameservers stay with your registrar or DNS provider and you add only the records you need: an A record for your website, an MX record for email and TXT records for email authentication. This is more flexible when your site and email live in different places.

For example, if your site is on web hosting and your email on a separate mail hosting service, the A record points to your hosting server and the MX record to your mail server. To keep your emails out of spam folders, add SPF, DKIM and DMARC records as well; we walk through them in SPF, DKIM and DMARC explained.

Common domain mistakes

  • Registering the domain in an agency's or employee's name: Whoever is listed as the registrant owns the domain. Getting it back when the relationship ends can be difficult.
  • Missing renewal emails: If the registration lists an email address you no longer use, the warnings never reach you.
  • Forgetting email when moving: When you change nameservers, your old DNS records don't move automatically. If you don't copy the MX and TXT records too, your email stops working.
  • Leaving similar names open: As your brand grows, consider registering common misspellings and other important extensions.

Using your domain with Nodesty

You can register your domain with any registrar you like; Nodesty services work with any domain. With our web hosting plans, you enter your domain when ordering and point its nameservers or A record to your hosting account; with free SSL through cPanel or DirectAdmin, your site is live within minutes. For email addresses on your own domain, our mail hosting plans include SpamExperts spam protection, webmail and IMAP/POP3 access. If hosting is new to you, start with What is web hosting?

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you buy a domain name or rent it?

You never own a domain outright; you register it through a registrar for a period of 1 to 10 years. As long as you renew it before it expires, it stays yours. If you don't, it becomes available again after a grace period and anyone can register it.

Is a domain name the same as web hosting?

No. The domain is your site's address; hosting is the server where its files live. You can buy them from different companies. As long as the domain's DNS records point to your hosting server, your site loads.

Should I choose .com or a country extension?

If you serve an international audience, .com is the safest choice. If you only serve one country, its extension, such as .co.uk or .de, builds local trust. Where possible, register both and redirect one to the other so nobody else can use your name.

Can I move my domain to another registrar?

Yes. Unlock the domain at your current registrar, get the transfer code (EPP or auth code) and start the transfer at the new one. Generic extensions can't be transferred within 60 days of registration or a previous transfer. A transfer usually adds a year to the registration.

How long after registering does my site go live?

Registration completes within minutes. After you set up DNS, changes reach resolvers worldwide within minutes to a few hours depending on the records' TTL. Nameserver changes can take up to 24–48 hours.

Is an expired domain deleted right away?

No. Generic extensions usually have a grace period after expiry, followed by a redemption period in which you can still recover the domain for a higher fee. Your website and email stop working during this time, so turn on auto-renewal to avoid it.
